Convenience Strollers - Avoid the Hassle

Have you ever been in public and seen some poor parent or grandparent struggling to open a massive stroller? These “one handed” operations usually require several hands to open and close, which is not always possible when you have a squirming infant or toddler to deal with as well. Convenience strollers provide an alternative to parents or grandparents who want a stroller but do not want to have to deal with the size and hassle of the larger strollers that come with many baby travel systems.

Convenience strollers are lightweight strollers that fold up easily to stash in your car’s trunk. They are more durable and comfortable than umbrella strollers, but less bulky than the single stroller that comes with a baby travel system. They typically forgo the luxuries like parent cup holders or huge under-carriage baskets. They do have conveniences, such as a cup holder for the child or a small basket for carrying necessary items, but the main goal of the stroller is to be compact, comfortable, and convenient to use.

Convenience strollers do not attach to infant carriers, so many parents wait to use them until the child is able to sit up on his own. However, many of these lightweight strollers do recline fully, so infants can use them comfortably, just not with the infant carrier.

Whenever you purchase a stroller, whether it be a normal sized stroller or a convenience stroller, you need to be concerned with safety. If you plan to use the stroller with a baby, not a toddler, you need a 5-point safety harness restraint system to keep your baby where she needs to be. Some types of lightweight strollers, such as umbrella strollers, can tip easily. Convenience strollers tend to have sturdy wheels and strong suspension systems to add stability for your baby. Finally, locking wheels will protect your baby from rolling away when you park the stroller, so this is an important safety feature.

If you have decided that convenience strollers fit your lifestyle well, there are some features you may wish to look for as you shop. First, look for a stroller that has adjustable handles. Can I check a stroller like this?

We will soon be flying to Florida with our three girls. Can we check our stroller? Will it count as a piece of our luggage? Even if it does, it’s ok because the girls won’t each need a big suitcase. I was just wondering.

You can take it with you as carry on - kids are allowed the carry on quota the same as an adult as well. I’ve found airlines are very understanding of mothers and the need to have certain things with you (toys, diaper bag, blankets, etc). Of course if you’re one of those mothers that demands the earth and has kids running and screaming around, you’re going to have trouble.

Back to the stroller… You’ll walk up the ramp (or whatever it’s called) to the plane with the stroller (bag & kids attached ;o) then just as you’re about to get on the plane, you’ll be asked to give it to a steward and they’ll go and store it with the rest of the luggage.

When you’re getting off the plane, you ask for the stroller and wait while they bring it up from luggage and you can then use it to transport your kids out into the airport. (I recommend being one of the last ones off the plane so you can do this without being pushed and shoved by everyone walking passed you).

One little warning: When we flew last time, along with us there was another mother there getting her stroller, who was having a loud fit because the stroller apparently got broken on the flight and she said this was the second time.

While I felt she had a crappy attitude, there is a point to note there and that’s to try and avoid using a new, expensive stroller as it may get damaged. Or perhaps if you have a way to pad/protect it before you hand it over to go to the luggage. Oh and it’s perhaps also a good idea to remove the food tray and any other detachable parts before handing it over.

We used an old beat up stroller so it didn’t matter for us and probably wouldn’t have noticed any dings or scrapes.

I think I would get one if I had 3 kids- because I love strollers! But for $249.99! Holy shiznits!

I never had one, because I only have 1 kid- the only issue I see with it is:

Your 3 year old will be up front, and new born in the back– if you must do a “pop-a-wheely” to get up a curb, it would be front heavy– and you might struggle

When did you get rid of your child’s stroller?

My son will be turning 4 in 3 months. We have 2 strollers: a cheap umbrella and a full size Graco. We haven’t used either in a while. Our last visit to the zoo he walked the entire way, even in slightly bad weather. We were impressed. I am wondering how do you know when it’s time to sell/etc the stroller. Should I hang onto it for some random future event or outing? Does a 4 year old still want to be strolled around the neighborhood in one?

Get rid of the Graco and hold on to the umbrella for another year just in case you may need it for some reason. If, at that point, you haven’t used it, toss it.

The Wheelchair & The Stroller

There are a lot of people looking for accessible places to travel to or to spend the day at. Commonly the word “accessible” is often accompanied by wheelchair, this place is or is not “wheelchair accessible.” Searching for the particular blue and white sign loosely includes anyone with a physical disability, like those using manual and electric wheelchair, scooters, and arm crutches.  Now-a-days almost anyone with a heart or obesity problem is deemed “physically disabled” and given a handicapped placard.

One group of people that are not considered physically disabled but often rely on the accessibility of a destination from the standards of a wheelchair user are parents with young kids, specifically strollers.  Stroller carrying parents also want to be in an area that allows them to be comfortable pushing their children around and not worrying about getting a small wheel stuck in a crack or not having adequate space to maneuver. As one mother says, “you just don’t think about it until you have a stroller.” Those in wheelchairs feel the exact same way, until you walk in their shoes so to speak. Even though parents with strollers and wheelchair users are different in many obvious ways, they may be the closest kind of people who “have a glimpse into what it’s like to use a wheelchair” as the mother with a stroller put it. The next time you have to wait for another elevator because it was full of strollers or the handicapped restroom because a mother his changing her child’s diapers take a deep breath because in many ways we are in the same boat.

Trickin’ out your baby’s ride with stroller accessories is a customizing thing to do. What would a stroller be without stroller cup holders and customized stroller covers and a stroller paint job, and unique stroller sun shade and a stroller … Whoa! Let’s not give Dad too many ideas. However, you might be surprised how many different stroller accessories are available. You did your homework and picked the perfect stroller for your child, but now that you’ve had the stroller a couple of months, you realize that there are a few ways to improve it to better fit your lifestyle. Oh, yeah and the child is now sitting up, holding his sippy cup, wait, there it goes flying again. (This kid has a really good arm!) The fully loaded and pricey strollers came with the stroller cup holder kit, but you didn’t go that route. Or you can’t find it right now. That’s OK. There are many after market (that’s a car accessory term) and generic stroller cup holder manufacturers. Huge numbers of them come up on the Internet if you type in “stroller cup holders.” If you head to your local baby accessory shop, you can find stroller cup holders there. If you do travel to the baby stroller accessory shop, make sure and take several containers with you that you will want to fit in the stroller’s cup holder. The favorite sippy cup, the cartoon character juice cup, the water bottle, what ever. The stroller accessories don’t stop with stroller cup holders, oh no. The real class comes with the stroller covers. Their purposes are to protect the baby from rain, insects and too much sun. The stroller covers that ward off the rain are usually clear plastic and do not add much to the overall tricked-out stroller look. But they do protect the baby from getting wet. The stylin’ stroller covers are the sun screens and the insect covers. If you look hard enough you can find these stroller covers in different colors. This is the stroller accessory that you can use to show your real sense of color and design. However, stroller covers are meant to protect your baby. Make sure each stroller cover is made for your stroller model. It is important that the stroller cover is the right size and shape to stay on your stroller. The fit is especially important with the rain stroller covers. Besides having the correct fit, the rain resistant stroller cover must be secure. Make sure the plastic rain cover fastens to the stroller frame in several places. Make sure you fasten it at each fastener and every time you use the stroller cover. You would not want it to come loose, your baby to pull it down and suffocate. Of course you would never leave your baby unattended, ever, even in a stroller, but the stakes go up if you are using a plastic rain cover. The other two types of stroller covers, sun protection and insect repelling, are made of mesh fabrics and “breathe.” While there is some danger the baby could get tangled up in the cloth, your child is less likely to die with these covers becoming unsecured. Trickin’ your baby’s ride can be fun, but it has its practical side, too. Just remember he will out grow this ride sooner than you can imagine.

How do I help my baby’s sunburnt cheek?

So I took Lydia on a walk today for about 15-20 min in her stroller… I made sure the shade was down which covered her when she was sitting up… though the problem was she drifted asleep and was leaning her head on the side of the stroller and her little right cheek was exposed to the sun and I didn’t even realize it until we were almost home… all day today her cheek has been pinkish red… I have gently touched it and it doesn’t seem to bother her when I touch it… Is there anything I can do to make the redness go away? I’m not sure how to tell if its hurting her or not without hurting her more by touching it… any advice? (Besides putting sunscreen on and making sure shes fully covered next time… I try to avoid sunscreen because shes still not old enough to use it and I thought she was fully covered in the shade)

A little bit of A&D would do the trick. I actually use it for my own sunburns as well.
