Panic Attacks and Assorted Mind Variances: Pieces of a Greater Whole
The human brain is absolutely amazing. And as much as we’ve learned about it, it remains one incredibly mysterious three-pound mass of tissue and fluid. The brain’s functioning has certainly been a puzzle to me over the many years, as it’s facilitated a long bout with panic disorder, as well as dances with other distressing mental, emotional, and physical phenomena. Lately, I’ve become more and more fascinated with how a panic sufferer’s assorted pathological challenges present and interact. Here are just some of my thoughts.
I was nine-years-old when an episode of derealization struck me like a lightening bolt while I was sitting at a kitchen table with my parents and their friends. I panicked and ran from the scene. During that same timeframe it was often written on my report cards that I was seemingly unable to sit still and would occasionally wander around the classroom. As a junior in college intrusive thoughts entered my airspace. I was walking down the sidewalk in downtown East Lansing, MI. and saw a woman coming toward me pushing a stroller. Out of nowhere I wondered what would happen if I punched her baby right in the face. Wow!
Well, let’s take a shot at labeling these events in an effort to gain some insight. The first event was a panic attack, the second involved inattention and hyperactivity, and the third event was an obsession with a yet to be understood bit of compulsive behavior tossed in. And I can tell you, for sure, these three amigos frequently travel together.
Let’s see if we can find some anatomical and physiological common ground here. Research tells us that the generation of panic attacks is based in the amygdala and other components of the limbic system, which are all located deep within the temporal lobes of the brain. The amygdala has been considered a component of the basal ganglia for decades; however, since it’s not involved in movement the association is fading. Finally, the amygdala works closely with the brain’s thalamus and prefrontal cortices in receiving, analyzing, and responding to incoming internal and external stimuli. The neurotransmitters involved in panic are serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.
ADHD sufferers have been found to have reduced brain mass in areas of the dorsal prefrontal cortex, located within the prefrontal lobe of both brain cortices. Also noted are reductions in size of the anterior temporal areas of both cortices. The anatomy lesson continues, as increases in grey matter volume in areas of the posterior temporal and inferior parietal cortices have also been detected. Finally, areas of the cerebrum’s anterior cingulate cortex and basal ganglia, as well as portions of the cerebellum, have shown variations in size. Neurotransmitters involved with ADHD are thought to be dopamine and norepinephrine.
When it comes to the brain anatomy involved in obsessions and compulsions, the orbital-prefrontal cortex, caudate nucleus (located within the basal ganglia, by the way), and the thalamus are most often mentioned. The neurotransmitters in the obsession/compulsion mix are believed to be serotonin and dopamine. Well, as it applies to panic, inattention, hyperactivity, obsessions, and compulsions, there appears to be plenty of common ground in terms of brain anatomy and neurotransmitters. Indeed, there are numerous dots that can be connected. Go ahead, go back and take a look at the article and make your own comparisons. I’m thinking you’ll see the similarities. And I believe these similarities account for my constellation of symptoms and disorders over the years, as well as those of one of our clients.
Not long after we began working with Taylor, our focus turned to his self-obsession and inability to quiet his mind. Yes, Taylor’s mind was very much working against him in a very spirited manner. I shared my history of inattention and obsessive/compulsive issues with him, and guess what? Taylor revealed he’d had some major problems with inattention throughout his elementary and secondary education experience. Isn’t it amazing how, with the right cues, seemingly meaningless information to a mind variance sufferer suddenly comes to the fore and becomes a factor in identification and treatment?
Well, to me, our assorted bits of pathology aren’t pieces from different puzzles that happened to have been thrown on the card table. No, they’re pieces from a massive and complicated puzzle that simply take a longer amount of time to piece together. It’s just all the more evidence that mind variances co-occur and interact. And though, in terms of treatment, we traditionally lean toward the myopic, focusing upon the issue that’s causing the most grief in-the-moment; all pieces of the grand puzzle must be considered. Only then can we maximize insight, identity, education, treatment, and hope.
Over the coming days, take the time to ponder your full constellation of symptoms and potential disorders. I’m telling you it’s a worthwhile exercise and your suppositions and conclusions merit discussion with your “help-team.” Again, the nuances of our mind variances, and their interaction, are amazingly fascinating. Well beyond that, understanding the dynamics will lead to extraordinary peace and calm.

Each model comes with a variety of features and the trick is to see which ones are right for you. You might have to decid between weight or storage, maneuverability or a trendy design, but on the whole you should be able to find a stroller that has everything you need. Before shopping make a check list of the features that are important to you.
Basket Capacity Once you decide where you and baby are going, you need to decide what you need to take with you. How much storage does that require? Do you need a basket that can fit a large diaper bag, extra clothing, and lunch? Or would a pocket for your keys and a cup holder work better for you? Be sure to check dimensions so you can take all your supplies wherever you need to go.

Maneuverability If it is possible – test drive a stroller before you buy! This will avoid a lot of trouble down the road. Test how easy you can make a turn, if you can fit though a narrow isle, and if the handlebars are high enough for you. Many of the newer models now feature adjustable handlebars which are a relief for taller parents.
Color Strollers now come in a variety of snazzy colors and prints, but how do you know which one to choose? First think about your baby. Dark colors absorb heat and may make your baby uncomfortable. On the other hand, light colors tend to show stains. They are good for night walk though, as they tend to be easier to see. Also think about the next little one who will be in the stroller. Purchasing a pink stroller may not be practical if the next baby is a boy! It is safer to stick with neutral colors because you never can tell.
Upkeep No matter how hard you try to avoid it, little ones are going to make messes. Be sure to take this into consideration when purchasing a stroller. Some stroller models conveniently allow you to remove the seat for washing. Others sell seat covers to keep any mess off the upholstery.
Accessories First, check out what comes with your stroller. Does it have cup holders or a snack tray? What accessories are important to you and your baby? If they are not included, many manufacturers make accessories to go with your stroller. Many sell rain covers, sun shades, cold weather boots, and even cup and snack holders. Just one more thing to check out before you buy.
Buying a stroller can seem very overwhelming, but just think about what is at stake. This is for your babies comfort, but you also have to be comfortable pushing your stroller around. Soon I am shopping for a new car. My little Pontiac Vibe just doesn’t work well where I live. I need something 4wd or AWD. I have been looking and looking. I do not want something that sucks the gas down. I am a momy of one little guy with another son on the way. I need something basically kid-proof that gets good gass milage and is awd. I have been looking at the Honda Element and it looks like a nice middle ground. No room for more passengers than my family members but it seems to get good gas milage. It looks virtually kid-proof and is roomy for strollers, wagons, sand toys… All the boys stuff I haul around.

i think i’ve mentioned before that i sell cars part time at (largest used car chain in the world…i can’t name it here).
I took in an element (trade in) and I sold an element(not the same one.. it was 07 Element SC) hours apart last saturday. i also worked part time for Honda, few years ago, so i think i’m qualified to answer this question.
the guy above pointed out the positives, very well. those cars are very roomy. can’t argue with space efficiency of a box. =)
again, like the customer above, first thing i’d worry about is the rear door set up. the ’suicide’ rear door does not open unless the front is open, and the seats are placed pretty far back from the point of entry.
2nd thing is, because it has no carpet, it lacks some of the sound insulation and tends to be noisy. and compared with some other SUV in its class, it’s not as comfortable.. the ride is choppy, the noise, seats, etc etc. the rear seat, again, is placed higher than the fronts. and when you go for test drive, sit in the back to make sure it’s okay. it tends to feel very bouncy back there.
power is adequate, but gas mileage is bit on the down side. the box doesn’t do well in cheating the wind.
the guy who sold us his element was not at all happy with his element.. he said it was the most uncomfortable car he’s ever owned.. and he traded it in for a lincoln. (talk about going from one extreme to another)
i’m not sure what your price range is… but for about the same price, (in used car market, not new) i’d look at Subaru Outback, (or Legacy wagon.. same thing without the big tires.. best kept secret in the industry) Toyota Sienna AWD, (rare, but you can find one.. bit expensive and not that great in gas, but there is no substitute for a minivan) Subaru Forester, toyota Rav-4 (06 and newer ones are much bigger now).

Choosing the incorrect stroller can make yours and your toddler’s shopping expeditions just that bit more difficult! 1. What do you think the main use for the stroller will be? Is for you to take around the block for a relaxing walk or are you more likely to go jogging with your toddler stroller? Infant car seats are designed for the comfort of newborns, and can be used from an infant’s birth until the infant reaches a weight of approximately 20 pounds (depending on the model of the car seat). These car seats are designed to be used in a rear facing position, with the infant riding in a lying down position, and with the car seat, itself, secured either by the car’s seat belts or a special anchoring system, and the infant secured in the car seat by a harness. This arrangement provides the infant with the best protection while riding in a vehicle. Infant car seats come in a variety of designs, colors, and patterns, and their cost and available features vary by brand and model. Child car seat manufacturers are bound by very strict guidelines, and you may be surprised to find that some of the more expensive car seats don’t provide any better level of protection than those which are more moderately priced.
There are also ‘convertible’ infant/toddler child car seats available. These car seats can be used for children from infancy (with the car seat in the rear facing position), into their toddler years (with the car seat turned around and used in the forward facing position), until they are ready for a booster car seat. In the rear facing mode, these types of car seats can typically be used with a child up to about 25 lbs, and then used in the forward facing position until the child reaches about 40 lbs. With this type of car seat, the base must be set properly in place before the other piece is locked to it, or the combination will not provide the child with the highest level of protection.
